Standard 10: Interpersonal Relationships and Ethics. The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well being and acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.
Rationale
I created a website on wikispaces as a tool for both parents and students in my 5th grade class. I used the wiki for communicating daily homework, linking important websites, and posting documents. The wiki has helped my communication with parents. It also encourages me to find new websites and pushes me to try new technologies with my students. I’m also digitizing and posting more of the handouts, worksheets, and directions from class along with practice work that can be done at home. Students enhanced their learning by reducing late or incomplete work, which kept them on pace in the classroom, while getting extra practice in areas of need.
KSD:
10.K.2 The teacher understands how factors in the students’ environment outside of school (e.g. family circumstances, community environments, health, and economic conditions) may influence students’ lives and learning.
The creation of my classroom website demonstrates my understanding of the importance of having a strong home to school connection with both students and parents. It also shows my knowledge of and understanding for a student’s life outside of the school day.
10.S.4 The teacher establishes respectful and productive relationships with parents and guardians from diverse home and community situations and seeks cooperative partnerships in support of student learning and well being.
Providing an easy way to communicate information with parents, other than email, tend to get parents more involved. I have found that parents who become involved in their child’s education tend to have a better outlook on the educational system. This in turn seems to promote better student success in the classroom.
10.D.1 The teacher values and appreciates all aspects of a child’s experience.
Students today have very busy lives with their attention and responsibilities split between many endeavors. The classroom website allowed me to maintain contact with students outside of the classroom. This was especially true with students who missed school as they were able to find out what was going on in the classroom thus making their transition back into school easier.
